Patriarch Daniel of Romania conveyed a message of compassion on Monday following the tragic train accident that occurred in southern Spain, resulting in the deaths of more than 39 people and injuries to at least 100 others.
The tragedy took place on Sunday at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time, when a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid, carrying around 300 passengers, derailed near the village of Adamuz in the province of Córdoba and collided with another train traveling in the opposite direction, which was carrying approximately 200 passengers.
In his message, dated Monday, January 19, 2026, Patriarch Daniel expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating:
“I learned with deep sadness of the tragic train accident that occurred near the locality of Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, in southern Spain, a tragedy that resulted in at least 39 people dead and over 100 injured.”
Addressing the families of the victims, the Patriarch emphasized the Church’s solidarity and compassion, noting:
“In these moments of great suffering for the families of the deceased, we extend our sincere condolences and assure them of our full compassion and solidarity.”
He also expressed his closeness to those injured in the accident, who are currently receiving medical care, adding:
“We are also close to those who were injured and are now under medical treatment, and we pray for their swift recovery.”
Patriarch Daniel further issued an appeal to Romanian faithful living in Spain, urging them to actively support those affected by the tragedy. As he stated, he called upon them
“to offer material and spiritual support to those affected, through acts of mercy, prayer, and words of consolation and encouragement.”
Concluding his message, the Patriarch offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the victims and for the healing of the injured, while expressing solidarity with the Spanish people during this time of national mourning:
“We pray to God for the rest of the souls of the departed and for the healing of those hospitalized. We stand with the Spanish people, who are now going through moments of profound suffering and pain.”
