Patriarch of Moscow visits Kazan’s historic St. Peter and Paul Cathedral on its 300th Anniversary

On July 20, 2026, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow visited the historic St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Kazan as part of his primatial visit to the Metropolis of Tatarstan. This year marks the 300th anniversary of the cathedral, one of the most renowned architectural landmarks and spiritual symbols of the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.

The Patriarch was welcomed outside the cathedral by students of the parish Sunday school before proceeding to the sanctuary. Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan and Tatarstan greeted the Primate and presented him with an icon of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

Addressing the faithful gathered in the cathedral, Patriarch Kirill reflected on the church’s survival through the Soviet era, describing it as a testimony that “God’s power is stronger than human power.” He noted that while those who sought to eradicate religious faith had disappeared, the Church had endured, with churches being restored, renovated, and newly built.

The Patriarch emphasized that believers draw strength through prayer, saying that human abilities are limited, but God’s power multiplies the efforts of those who place their trust in Him.

Patriarch Kirill also expressed gratitude to the regional authorities, particularly the Head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, for their respectful attitude toward Orthodoxy. He praised the longstanding coexistence of Orthodox Christians and Muslims in the region, describing their cooperation as an example for societies around the world where religious tensions continue to persist.

“A person who truly believes in God cannot cause suffering to others who also believe in God, even if they worship differently,” he said, adding that the strengthening of mutual respect contributes to the stability of both society and the state.

As a commemorative gift, Patriarch Kirill presented the cathedral with an icon of St. Matrona of Moscow. Explaining his choice, he recalled the saint’s life of physical suffering and unwavering faith, noting that despite being blind and unable to walk from birth, she became a source of spiritual consolation for thousands, even during the years of Soviet persecution.

“The words of Scripture, ‘My strength is made perfect in weakness,’ were fully revealed in her life,” the Patriarch said. “I wanted to present her icon as a sign that God’s power is stronger than every human power. When we believe in God, we come into contact with that great power and receive strength to accomplish good works.”

Concluding his address, Patriarch Kirill wished God’s blessing upon the faithful of Kazan and prayed that the country’s spiritual, intellectual, and political forces would work together for the good of the homeland and its people.
