On January 25, 2025, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia sent a message of condolence to the Holy Synod of the Albanian Orthodox Church, mourning the passing of its Primate, Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania.
“With deep sorrow, I learned of the passing of Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and All Albania,” Patriarch Kirill wrote. “On behalf of the archpastors, clergy, monastics, and laity of the Russian Orthodox Church, and personally, I express my heartfelt condolences for the great loss suffered by the sister Albanian Church and the entire Orthodox family.”
Patriarch Kirill highlighted Archbishop Anastasios’ long life, wholly dedicated to the service of Christ and His Church. “From his youth, His Beatitude devoted himself to diligent work in the Lord’s vineyard. Responding to the Savior’s call to preach the Word of God ‘to the ends of the earth’ (Acts 1:8), he embraced missionary work. During his years in Africa, his gifts as a fiery preacher, pastor, and builder of ecclesiastical life shone brightly. He became an exemplary missionary, zealous for good works (Titus 2:14),” the message noted.
The Patriarch emphasized the Archbishop’s pivotal role in reviving the Albanian Orthodox Church after decades of severe persecution under communist rule. “In the Russian Church, which endured horrific persecution under atheistic regimes, we hold profound respect for the efforts of the late Primate in restoring the Albanian Orthodox Church. His high standing in the Orthodox and broader Christian world, his extensive academic connections, and his invaluable experience in Africa all contributed to the successful restoration of vibrant church life in Albania under his wise leadership.”
Patriarch Kirill also reflected on his personal bond with Archbishop Anastasios, describing his passing as a personal loss. “Our brotherly relationship spanned many years. He visited the Russian Orthodox Church multiple times and participated in significant celebrations. I warmly recall my visit to Albania in 2018 at his invitation, where I witnessed firsthand the fruits of his tireless labor and that of the Albanian Synod.”
The Patriarch concluded by honoring the late Archbishop as a defender of sacred canons, a guardian of Church tradition, and a faithful servant of Christ. “He was like the wise man who built his house on the rock (Matthew 7:24), steadfast in his convictions and faithful to Christ and His Holy Church.”
“May the Lord Jesus Christ, the Resurrection and the Life, grant rest to His faithful servant in the heavenly mansions, where there is no pain, sorrow, or sighing, but life everlasting. Eternal and blessed memory to the newly departed Archbishop Anastasios!” wrote Patriarch Kirill.
