The Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Shio III, emphasized the enduring message of repentance and spiritual vigilance during his homily on the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Senaki on July 7.
Addressing hierarchs, clergy, and faithful, the Patriarch congratulated the congregation on the feast and reflected on the life and mission of St. John the Baptist, whom Christ described as “the greatest among those born of women.”
“He was the great preacher of repentance,” the Patriarch said, noting that John prepared Israel and all humanity to receive the Savior. He stressed that repentance is not merely an initial step in the Christian life but a lifelong journey, accompanying believers “from youth to old age.”
Recalling the miraculous circumstances of the saint’s birth and his ascetic life in the wilderness, the Patriarch highlighted John’s call to repentance and faith in the coming Messiah. He noted that through his holiness and zeal, St. John was found worthy to become the Forerunner and Baptizer of Jesus Christ.
The Patriarch underscored the continuing relevance of the saint’s message today.
“St. John the Baptist, this great preacher of repentance, reminds and teaches us not to forget that this temporary earthly life is only preparation for eternity. At the future judgment, we will be called to account even for every idle word,” he said.
He urged the faithful, especially during the fasting period, to honor the saint by listening to and following his teachings.
The Patriarch also marked the feast day of the cathedral dedicated to the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to its construction. He paid special tribute to Hieromonk Ambakum, who played a leading role in organizing the building of the church.
Reflecting on his years of service in the Senaki and Chkhorotsku Diocese, the Patriarch spoke warmly of the region and its people.
“I thank God that I was called to serve in this precious diocese, because I learned so much here,” he said. “Through my relationship with you and through studying the lives of the great saints who labored in this holy diocese, I gained invaluable experience.”
He added that the culture, beauty, and traditions of Samegrelo are essential for understanding the Georgian spirit and national identity.
Concluding his homily, the Patriarch prayed for the Diocese of Senaki and Chkhorotsku, for all of Georgia, and for the unity, strength, and salvation of the country.
“Through the prayers of St. John the Baptist, may the Lord help us learn repentance and live our Christian life faithfully,” he said. “May God bless, strengthen, unite, and save our country.”
