On the eve of the beginning of Great Lent (22 February 2026), Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II,of All Georgia, addressed his flock with a heartfelt pastoral message, calling the faithful to repentance, reconciliation, and renewed spiritual effort.
“The time has come for the beginning of Great Lent,” the Patriarch wrote, describing it as “the most special period of the year – a forty-day journey filled with compunction, repentance, gratitude, and, at the same time, hope, to which Holy Week is added.”
Emphasizing the importance of fasting and spiritual struggle, the Patriarch noted: “The observance of this fast is necessary for all who consider themselves Orthodox (with the exception of those who have serious health problems), so that, according to our strength, we may worthily meet the glorious day of the Resurrection of the Savior.”
Calling the faithful to practical acts of Christian life, the Patriarch urged: “Forget mutual grievances, reconcile with your enemies, do not respond to those who speak evil, strengthen your prayer life, constantly say the Jesus Prayer and the prayer to the Theotokos (‘Open to us the doors of mercy’), as well as Psalm 50. Strengthen yourselves every week through confession and Holy Communion, and clothe yourselves in love, peace, and kindness.”
In a message filled with pastoral warmth, the Patriarch prayed for the people of God, saying: “May God bless each one of you, forgive your sins, and grant you strength to be called faithful sons and daughters of God.”
Addressing the faithful with humility, the Patriarch added: “My spiritual children, I ask you also to forgive me for my sins and weaknesses.”
Concluding his message, he assured the faithful of his constant intercession: “Always praying for you,” signing the address as Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.
