Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria issued a heartfelt message to the children of Bulgaria on June 1, 2026, marking International Children’s Day and extending his paternal blessings to young people throughout the country.
Addressing “the beloved children of Bulgaria,” the Patriarch expressed the prayers and concern of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church for their health, happiness, and peaceful upbringing. He wished that every child might grow up surrounded by the love of parents, relatives, teachers, and society as a whole, enjoying a childhood filled with joy, security, and hope.
Patriarch Daniel noted that this year’s Children’s Day coincided with the great Christian feast of Pentecost, dedicated to the Holy and Life-Giving Spirit. Reflecting on the significance of the feast, he prayed that the Holy Spirit would enlighten the minds and hearts of children, inspire them toward goodness, and preserve within them the purity and innocence of childhood.
Encouraging young people to cultivate a relationship with God through prayer, the Patriarch reminded them that the Church is the place where the Holy Spirit dwells and that they are cherished members of the ecclesial family.
In his message, Patriarch Daniel described childhood as one of life’s most precious periods—a time of joy, discovery, learning, and wonder. He emphasized the importance of gratitude to God for the beauty of creation and encouraged children to love God with sincerity and simplicity, striving to imitate His gentleness and humility.
At the same time, the Patriarch acknowledged the challenges faced by many children around the world. He expressed sorrow that some grow up without parental care or in environments marked by violence, hardship, and harmful influences. Nevertheless, he affirmed that God’s love extends to every child and recalled that Christ Himself entered the world as a child, revealing God’s boundless love for humanity.
Patriarch Daniel stressed that the Orthodox Church has always shown special care and concern for children, praying continually for their well-being and spiritual growth. He expressed the hope that they would grow up in peace, protected from corruption and evil, and that their joy and innocence would continue to inspire society.
Concluding his message, the Patriarch called upon children to rejoice in the blessed years of childhood and to grow in goodness, wisdom, and understanding, describing this as God’s will for every person.
“May God’s peace and His boundless love and care be with all of you,” Patriarch Daniel said, wishing all children a joyful and blessed feast day.
