“This collection of religious-themed artworks is intended to present what brings glory and honor to Bulgaria—namely, the holiness found throughout our land, for every corner of our country has been sanctified by the life of a saint,” said Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria in his address today. The Patriarch, together with Metropolitan Gabriel of Lovech and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Raya Nazaryan, inaugurated the exhibition “Prayer for Bulgaria” in the building of the Bulgarian Parliament.
The works on display are by Antonia Miravolieva-Bozhanina. The exhibition—an eight-year endeavor—features a collection of paintings depicting the spiritual life and sacred sites of each Bulgarian diocese. The artworks are crafted from natural botanical materials such as herbariums, leaves, grasses, and flowers, giving each piece a unique organic texture and symbolism.
Raya Nazaryan, Speaker of the National Assembly, praised both the artistic and spiritual value of the collection:
“The paintings presented today are remarkable works of art, but their deepest message lies in the way they reflect the spiritual life of the thirteen dioceses of Bulgaria. Each painting carries a profoundly emotional message about the strength of faith, repentance, forgiveness, and how we can become better Christians.”
She expressed her gratitude to Patriarch Daniel and the Holy Synod for allowing these works to be exhibited in Parliament on the eve of the Nativity of Christ.
Metropolitan Gabriel emphasized the significance of making space for spiritual reflection within the nation’s legislative institution: “It is of great importance for the National Assembly to have the opportunity to be touched by God’s grace. The fate of Bulgaria depends on your work. May the icons in this exhibition bless you and grant you wisdom, so that you may make the best decisions inspired by the Lord,” he said.
More information about the exhibition and the creative vision behind the artworks can be found in the interview Antonia Miravolieva-Bozhanina gave to the official website of the Holy Synod.
