On June 8, the Orthodox Church commemorated the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates, a Roman military commander who endured great suffering and martyrdom for his faith in Christ during the fourth century.
On this occasion, the parish dedicated to St. Theodore Stratelates in Sofia’s Benkovski district celebrated its patronal feast with a festive Divine Liturgy presided over by Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria and Metropolitan of Sofia.
Concelebrating with the Patriarch were Fr. Lyubomir Yankov, rector of the parish, Archpriest Georgi Yankov, Archpriest Ventsislav Popivanov, Archpriest Arseniy Kanyov, Archpriest Sava Kokudev, and Deacon Ivan Petkov. The liturgical hymns were offered by singers from the parish choir, while the church was filled with faithful gathered for the celebration.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Patriarch Daniel addressed the clergy and faithful, reflecting on the witness and martyrdom of St. Theodore Stratelates and drawing spiritual lessons for contemporary Christians.
“There is no person who desires to live a godly life and is not persecuted or tested,” the Patriarch said. He noted that in modern times persecution often comes first through the voice of conscience, which reproaches believers whenever they fail to follow Christ’s commandments.
“Our conscience clearly bears witness within us and can become a tormentor when we stray from God’s will,” he explained, recalling Christ’s exhortation to be reconciled with one’s adversary before facing judgment.
Patriarch Daniel also spoke about the struggle against passions and temptations that seek to separate people from Christ. He observed that God sometimes allows difficulties, misunderstandings, and even unjust accusations from relatives, friends, or fellow Christians in order to strengthen believers spiritually and teach humility.
Referring to Christ’s words, “Rejoice when people falsely say all kinds of evil against you,” the Patriarch emphasized that enduring injustice with patience opens the heart to divine grace.
“Only then can we experience the grace that strengthened St. Theodore Stratelates and all the martyrs,” he said. “The Holy Fathers teach that when we endure injustice, God’s grace rests upon us.”
He encouraged the faithful to seek this grace through humility, prayer, and forgiveness, adding that sincere prayer should begin with oneself and then extend even to those who cause suffering.
Following the service, Fr. Lyubomir Yankov, on behalf of the parish and church board, expressed gratitude to Patriarch Daniel for his visit, his pastoral care, and his leadership of the liturgical celebration. Commemorative gifts were also presented to the Bulgarian Patriarch.
The feast concluded in a spirit of joy and thanksgiving, honoring the enduring witness of St. Theodore Stratelates and his example of steadfast faith amid trials and persecution.
