On September 8, the Orthodox Church joyously celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, born to Saints Joachim and Anna. This sacred event was marked by a solemn Patriarchal Divine Liturgy in the Metropolitan Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
Presiding over the celebration was Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel, who was joined by Bishop Pachomius of Branitsa, First Vicar of the Metropolitan of Sofia, Archimandrite John, Protocyncellus of the Metropolis of Sofia, and Archimandrite Nicodemus. The liturgical hymns resounded through the church, with the participation of the chanters and choir.
At the conclusion of the service, Patriarch Daniel delivered a heartfelt homily, reflecting on the spiritual significance of the day:
“The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a great and glorious feast, long anticipated. By divine providence, the way was prepared for the Pure Virgin to be born, who would serve the ultimate mystery—the Incarnation of the Son of God for the salvation of humanity. The Holy Mother of God is the first to completely fulfill the greatest commandment given by God. She accomplished God’s plan for the coming of the Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ,” Patriarch Daniel said.
He went on to emphasize the challenge of cultivating God’s peace within the human heart and urged the faithful to reflect on how much of their lives are filled with peace and gratitude. He encouraged everyone to strive, despite hardships, to fill their hearts with divine peace, joy, and praise.
Patriarch Daniel concluded by blessing the congregation, offering these words of guidance: “Let us strive, following the example of the righteous Saints Joachim and Anna and the young Virgin Mary, to uphold fidelity within our families and live not for ourselves, but for Christ.”
