On April 2, 2026, Patriarch John X of Antioch received Dr. Ahmad Mowaffaq Zidan, Media Adviser to the Syrian Presidency, at the Patriarchal residence in Damascus.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the current situation in Syria, with particular reference to the recent events in Al-Suqaylabiyah, where acts of violence and vandalism were reported. Patriarch John X stressed the urgent need for firm action against anyone who undermines civil peace, emphasizing that such incidents must not be overlooked.
He warned against attempts to incite sectarian tensions, noting that Syria has historically been a land of coexistence and harmony among its diverse communities. The Patriarch highlighted the importance of preserving this legacy and safeguarding social unity, especially during challenging times.
For his part, Dr. Zidan expressed his appreciation for the historic role of the Church of Antioch in building bridges of communication and fostering dialogue among different religious and social groups. He acknowledged the Church’s continued contribution to promoting peaceful coexistence and national unity.
The meeting concluded in a spirit of mutual understanding, reaffirming the shared commitment to maintaining stability, strengthening social cohesion, and protecting the longstanding tradition of coexistence in Syria.
