Patriarch John X of Antioch has expressed heartfelt condolences following the passing of Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia.
In a message sent from Damascus on March 19, 2026, the Patriarch of Antioch conveyed the sorrow of the faithful of the Antiochian Church over the loss of the Georgian primate. His message was addressed to Metropolitan Shio of Senaki and Chkhorotsku, Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal Throne of Georgia.
In his condolence letter, Patriarch John X stated that he had received the news of the repose of Patriarch Ilia II with deep sadness. He extended sincere condolences to the clergy and faithful of the Georgian Church, noting that they have lost a beloved shepherd.
He also emphasized that the Antiochian Church joins in prayer for the repose of the departed Patriarch’s soul, asking the Lord to grant him eternal rest.
