Patriarch of Antioch celebrates Divine Liturgy and calls for renewal and unity in Syria

On January 12, 2025, Patriarch John X presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Cross in Qassaa, Damascus. The service was attended by a large number of faithful, including young people and elders from the congregation.

In his homily, Patriarch John emphasized the significance of rebuilding Syria during this critical phase of recovery. He underscored the importance of unity, positive action, and cooperation among Syrians to establish a brighter future for their nation.

In his homily, the Patriarch congratulated President Joseph Aoun on his election, offering prayers for his success in addressing Lebanon’s challenges, such as restoring constitutional order, reclaiming stolen assets, and ensuring justice and equality for all citizens. He expressed his hopes for a united and prosperous Lebanon, extending his blessings to the Lebanese people.

Patriarch John reflected on the Gospel passage of the day from Matthew, which recalls Isaiah’s prophecy: “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light” (Matthew 4:16). He connected this message to the birth of Christ, emphasizing that God’s light dispels darkness and illuminates human hearts. He also highlighted the shared recognition of Christ in the Qur’an, noting verses that affirm Jesus’ divine mission, such as Surah An-Nisa (4:171) and Surah Al-Baqarah (2:253).

The Patriarch expanded on the concept of “light,” which he equated with God Himself. Light, he explained, drives away darkness and restores dignity. He spoke of true revolution as a journey toward light and renewal, where human dignity is restored, and oppression is overcome. This revolution, he noted, must occur on both personal and societal levels.

On a personal level, revolution involves self-transformation, where individuals rise above their weaknesses and become renewed in the image of their Creator. On a societal level, revolution entails building a nation founded on principles of light, human dignity, equality, and justice, ensuring that all citizens enjoy equal rights and freedoms.

The Patriarch asserted that the Church is deeply rooted in the pursuit of renewal, light, and freedom. He reaffirmed the Church of Antioch’s steadfast commitment to these values and expressed hope for a new Syria built on these principles. He called on Syrians—Muslims and Christians alike—to unite in rebuilding their nation, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and mutual respect.

In closing, Patriarch John extended his blessings to the faithful in Syria and the diaspora, assuring them that the Church remains steadfast in its witness to God’s truth. He encouraged all to rejoice in the Lord and to trust in His peace, which surpasses all understanding.

The Patriarch met with parishioners after the service to hear their concerns and aspirations, further demonstrating his pastoral care and commitment to the faithful. He also held a separate meeting with members of the Archdiocese of Latakia.
