“The waters of the Mediterranean are peaceful and non-negotiable. We support them, we care for them and we love them,” said Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria, who blessed the waters of Alexandria in the ceremony that took place in the historic Yacht Club of Alexandria, immediately after the service at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Annunciation of the Greek Community of Alexandria.
“Our beloved Greece and our Cyprus, today our Alexandria from Egypt greets you. And we declare today that these waters of the Mediterranean are peaceful, they are blessed, they are for the friendship of the peoples. I wish you prosperity, full of peace, joy and hope. May God always be with you.”
The procession was attended by the Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria, Metropolitan Narcissus of Naucratis, Metropolitan Daniel of Axum, and the Bishop Germanos of Tamiatheus, Consul General of Greece in Alexandria Athanasios Kotsionis, Consul of Lebanon Abdelaziz Aisa, the shipowner Kostas Varouxis, who serves as the liaison between the Greek and Egyptian Navy, General Secretary of the Greek Community of Alexandria Dimitris Kavouras, President of the Greek Yacht Club of Alexandria Lilika Thlivitou, and other officials.
The event ended with the cutting of the traditional New Year’s pie of the Greek Yacht Club of Alexandria, where a video message was broadcast by the Secretary-General for Greek Diaspora and Public Diplomacy Ioannis Chrysoulakis, who stressed that the Greek State was on the side of the Greek community in Egypt.
