Patriarch Kirill and Putin exchange congratulations: “Russia cannot be defeated by external forces”

By Konstantinos Menyktas

“We believe that no external force can defeat Russia,” said Patriarch Kirill of Moscow while addressing members of the Russian Armed Forces on February 23, 2025, as Russia marked “Defender of the Fatherland Day.” Speaking at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin walls, the Patriarch laid a wreath and extended his congratulations to the military—just one day before the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The Church prays for the Armed Forces at every Divine Service,” he stated, emphasizing the unique status of the military in the Church’s prayers. “Unlike any other profession, the military holds a special place in our supplications.”

Continuing his remarks, Patriarch Kirill framed Russia’s aggression as a defensive struggle, reinforcing the stance of the Russian Orthodox Church, which has openly supported the war against Ukraine, a fellow Orthodox nation.

“Today, we face difficult times. Those who defend Russia with arms in hand are engaged in a struggle that is not merely political but a battle for the future of historic Rus’,” he declared, presenting the war as an existential fight rather than an act of aggression.

He also stressed the Church’s role in supporting state policy and military action, stating: “That is why the Church makes special supplications for our leaders and the military forces.”

In his speech, Patriarch Kirill praised President Vladimir Putin and the unity of the Russian people in support of the war effort: “We believe that no external force can defeat Russia—historically, only internal discord has posed a real danger. However, thanks to the leadership of our President and government, there is no such threat today.”

He further asserted that “patriotic sentiments prevail across all layers of the population—not just among those in military service, but among all Russian citizens.”

Concluding his address, Patriarch Kirill reaffirmed his blessing upon the Russian military, declaring: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you. May God protect you in your service, and through you, may He bless and safeguard the Armed Forces of Russia.”

His speech once again highlighted the alignment between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Kremlin, portraying the war as a divine struggle and reinforcing the Church’s active role in legitimizing the Russian government’s military actions.

Russian President Putin Congratulates Patriarch Kirill on Defender of the Fatherland Day

On February 23, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia on the occasion of Defender of the Fatherland Day.

“Your Holiness,

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on Defender of the Fatherland Day!

This holiday has always been solemnly celebrated in our country as a symbol of the people’s boundless respect for the victories and heroic feats of our ancestors. The unbreakable link between historical traditions of devoted service to the Motherland and genuine love for one’s homeland continues to inspire the warriors of Russia today. With courage and determination, they fight for truth and justice, for the freedom and independence of our country.

I wish you success and all the very best.”

President Putin’s message reflects the deep connection between Russia’s historical legacy, its military traditions, and the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in fostering national unity and patriotism.
