The bill granting legal status to the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai regarding its presence in Greece was approved by the plenary session of the Hellenic Parliament.
Specifically, with the approval of the majority of the Greek Parliament, a public legal entity is established under the name: “Greek Orthodox Holy Royal Autonomous Monastery of the Holy and God-Trodden Mount Sinai in Greece.”
This decision by Parliament comes at a particularly critical time for the Monastery of Saint Catherine, as the Sinai Brotherhood is undergoing a severe internal crisis following a decision by part of its members to dismiss Archbishop Damianos.
Moreover, this crisis is unfolding shortly after the Egyptian authorities decided to challenge the status and character of the Holy Monastery.
