Metropolitan Polykarpos (Stavropoulos), currently Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal, was elected the new Metropolitan of Italy by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Throne, according to today’s decision, fully confirming the publication of orthodoxtimes.com.
The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Throne selected Metropolitan Polykarpos from Nafpaktos as the successor of late Metropolitan Gennadios of Italy, who fell asleep in the Lord on October 16 last year.
Metropolitan Polykarpos has a long experience after serving the Italian Orthodox Church from 1990 until 2007, when he was elected Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal.
From 1992 to 2007 Metropolitan Polykarpos also served as Protosyncellus of the Metropolis of Italy.
