Orthodoxtimes.com is participating in the work stoppage declared by the Journalists’ Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA).
For this reason, no news will be published between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (Greek time) on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
Read the ESIEA announcement:
The Panhellenic Federation of Journalists’ Unions and its member associations (ESIEA, ESIEMTH, ESIEPIN, ESIETHS-EE, ESPIT) will take part in a four-hour work stoppage from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, as part of the nationwide 24-hour strike declared by labor centers and ADEDY, with the support of GSEE.
Workers in the press and media sector join their voices with workers across Greece against government policies that lead to further deregulation of labor relations and the erosion of hard-won rights.
Journalists, already burdened by exhausting schedules and increasing workloads, say “NO to the 13-hour workday”, emphasizing that they are not disposable and that their time cannot be treated as an unlimited commodity.
This latest blow to labor rights comes amid employers’ ongoing refusal to engage in dialogue for the establishment of Collective Labor Agreements in the private sector. This refusal results in underpaid workers trapped in individual contracts, where the law of the strongest prevails. Moreover, no measures are being taken to address the dismantling of labor relations and collective labor law.
At the same time, not only media workers but Greek society as a whole are facing a series of explosive price increases, creating a suffocating financial situation as incomes and resources continue to dwindle, with no effective measures to counter rising costs.
The unions protest the growing pressure on journalists and journalism, which ultimately undermines reliable and free information — a cornerstone of democracy.
The journalists demand:
Collective Labor Agreements (CLAs) across all private media and immediate, substantial increases in wages and pensions.
They highlight that EU directives call on member states to ensure that CLAs cover at least 80% of workers.Effective measures to combat inflation and unemployment.
National and European-level actions to protect incomes and jobs in the private sector.
Reliable and pluralistic information for all citizens.
