Like the other religious communities of the country, the Orthodox Church of Albania participated in the celebrations marking the 113th anniversary of Albania’s independence (1912–2025).
Doxologia services were held in the cathedral churches across the country: in Tirana, where Archbishop Ioanis presided; in Gjirokastër, led by Metropolitan Nathaniel; in Fier, by Metropolitan Nicholas; in Berat, by Metropolitan Astios; and in Korçë, also presided over by Metropolitan Astios.
In his message, Archbishop Ioannis emphasized the shared responsibility of all citizens for the well-being and progress of the nation, stating: “We must be good stewards of this country that God has entrusted to us. We thank God for everything He has given us, but along with His gifts, He has also given us responsibility. This responsibility belongs to everyone. Each person, in his place of work, must strive to bless and help this country prosper. As I often say, a true patriot is the one who helps his homeland flourish, not the one who curses others. We simply need to fulfill our duty so that our country may thrive.”
It is worth noting that Albania was the last Balkan state to gain its independence.
