Oakleigh Grammar School in Melbourne commemorated the 204th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence with its annual school event.
The event was attended by students, staff, parents, members of the School Board, including President Mr. Christos Damatopoulos and Treasurer Mr. Sam Vassos.
Among the distinguished guests were Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, Fathers Christos Dimolianis, Panteleimon Laskaris, and Stavros Kakavas, Mr. Antonios Tsourdalakis, President of the Victorian Intercommunity Council, and Ms. Maria Triantafyllou, Deputy Coordinator of Education for Australia and New Zealand.
On behalf of Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the Bishop of Melbourne delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the significance of the Greek War of Independence and its coincidence with Great Lent and the Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos.
Following this, the Byzantine Choir performed several beautiful hymns before the school’s principal, Mr. Mark Robertson, addressed the audience. In his speech, he focused on the Greek concept of “Philotimo,” highlighting its deep connections with the school’s values of humility, ambition, respect, and kindness.
