LAST UPDATE: 13:15
On Tuesday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the opening of 3.5% of the Famagusta region, calling on the Greek Cypriots to apply to the committee set up by the pseudo-state to take back their property, provided, of course, that they recognize the Turkish Cypriot administration as reported by skai.gr.
Speaking from occupied Nicosia, where a military parade took place on the day of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the Turkish President said: “Instead of being a symbol of inactivity, non-solution and impasse, Varosha will become a symbol of prosperity of Cyprus,” as reported by ANA-MPA
A little while ago, the news was announced by the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar: “By decision of our ‘cabinet’, the status of the military zone of the region corresponding to 3.5% of the enclosed Varosha will be abolished and the second phase of the initiative will begin for Varosha”, he stated as reported by ANA-MPA.
In an incendiary speech —in the presence of the leader of the pseudo-state, Ersin Tatar— Erdogan spoke of “enemies of the Turkish Cypriots,” including Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“All of them will talk about Cyprus today. We will listen to them,” he said, “but we do not care what they say.”
The Turkish president also attacked the European Union, “saying that we will not take their advice… We will do what we have to do,” he said, reiterating his theory of two states in Cyprus.
He also claimed that “the policy of Europeans and Americans is based on lies,” and accused Brussels of promising help to the Turkish Cypriots and failing to do so.
Defying international legitimacy and reactions, he insisted that “the new negotiation process in Cyprus can only take place between two states.”
“We do not have another 50 years to lose for Cyprus, the Turkish proposals for a peaceful settlement are still on the table,” the Turkish president repeated.
