A new monastery will be established in the State of Victoria in Australia. The men’s monastery will be built on a plot called Mela Mountain, near the city of Flowerdale.
The decision was made on Tuesday, December 10, during the meeting of Archbishop Makarios and the President of the Pontic Foundation “Panagia Sumela” of Australia, Onoufrios Gorozidis.
Onoufrios Gorozidis owns a 1,200 stremma plot on Flagpole Hill Mountain Mela, which he has named “Mela Mountain”. Part of this plot – some 400 stremmata – will be donated to the Archdiocese of Australia for the construction and establishment of the new monastery.
It is worth noting that “Mela Mountain” has hosted various events, with reference to Greek and, in particular, Pontic tradition, and within the plot there is a wooden iconostasis dedicated to Panagia Sumela, which attracts many pilgrims from the Greek community in Australia.
