A Georgian translation of the book (doctoral dissertation) On the Codification of the Sacred Canons and Canonical Institutions in the Orthodox Church by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has been published by Diakonia Publishing House as part of its Library of Canon Law series.
The translation was prepared by Rev. Fr. Dr. Nicholas Gurgenidze, who noted that the codification of the sacred canons remains one of the central issues in contemporary Orthodox canon law and described the volume as the most comprehensive and authoritative study dedicated to this subject. The present edition is the first translation and republication of the work since its original publication in Greek, making it a significant contribution to Georgian theological and canonical scholarship.
The Georgian edition includes an introductory study of Dr. Gurgenidze on the meaning, history, and theology of the codification of the sacred canons, as well as an article by Grand Ecclesiarch Archimandrite Aetios to the Ecumenical Patriarch’s contribution to Orthodox canon law as a distinguished canonist and Doctor of Canon Law.
The book’s cover features a thirteenth-century Georgian manuscript of the Nomocanon (A-76), highlighting the richness of Georgia’s canonical tradition and heritage.
Special acknowledgements were expressed to PD Dr. theol. habil. Fr. Ephräm Lomidze for his editorial work, as well as to Nino Sadzaglishvili, Nino Didberuashvili, and Fr. Longinoz Suarishvili, who has collaborated for many years on the translation of works related to Orthodox canon law.
The publication offers readers an opportunity to encounter Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew not only as the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Church, but also as a distinguished Orthodox canonist and theologian whose theological and academic contribution has had a lasting impact on contemporary canonical scholarship.
