Archimandrite Symeon Papadopoulos, head of the Sinai Metochion in Alepochori, has been elected the new Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai.
The new Abbot was chosen following elections held this morning at the Monastery during the General Assembly of the Sinai Brotherhood.
Without any dispute over the procedure, both sides of the Brotherhood reached consensus, resulting in 19 votes in favor out of 20, with the candidate himself casting a blank ballot in accordance with ancient custom.
The decision of the General Assembly will now be communicated to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, after which the process will proceed for the ordination of the new Abbot and Archbishop of Sinai.
On Friday, September 12, Archbishop Damianos, former Archbishop of Sinai, formally submitted his previously announced resignation. In his letter, he voiced concern for the future of the Monastery and underscored the importance of unity around the new Abbot.
