On May 29, 2026, in connection with the issuance of a commemorative coin, Patriarch Shio III of Georgia received at the Patriarchal Residence the President of the National Bank of Georgia, Natia Turnava.
During the meeting, Turnava presented to the Patriarch the concept and design of the coin. The National Bank will work on the coin’s design in cooperation with the Patriarchate of Georgia.
The decision to issue commemorative gold and silver coins was made by the National Bank following a recommendation from a special commission established to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion of Georgia. The commission is composed of representatives of the Government and the Patriarchate.
The co-chairs of the commission are Patriarch Shio III and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
