In response to recent seismic activity in the Chalkidiki region of Northern Greece, including Mount Athos, Professor Efthymis Lekkas, President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), offered reassuring insights regarding the situation.
Speaking to ANA-MPA, Professor Lekkas described the seismic activity as potentially producing tremors of up to magnitude five on the Richter scale, an intensity deemed unlikely to cause significant damage. He also noted that the seismic sequence might continue without further escalation.
During a comprehensive meeting held in Chalkidiki as part of the regular Civil Protection coordination, Lekkas emphasized that the region is well-prepared and adheres to all required safety protocols.
He expressed satisfaction with the current state of preparedness and encouraged both tourists and residents to remain calm. However, he advised that everyone should continue to follow any future recommendations issued by the authorities.
