Moscow characterized today’s three-hour meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, as “constructive,” highlighting a rapprochement between the positions of the United States and Russia.
The meeting, held in Moscow at what Trump has described as a “critical moment” for diplomacy aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, focused heavily on finding a path forward, said Putin’s foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov.
“This discussion allowed Russia and the United States to bring their positions closer, not only regarding Ukraine but also on a range of other international issues,” Ushakov told reporters.
Regarding the ongoing conflict, Ushakov added, “The conversation particularly emphasized the possibility of resuming direct negotiations between representatives of the Russian Federation and Ukraine.”
Russia and Ukraine have not held direct talks since the first weeks of Russia’s invasion, which began in February 2022.
As of now, Steve Witkoff has not issued a statement about the outcome of the meeting.
