This past weekend, MET Youth Canada (the Youth Department of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada) held its annual National Assembly in Montreal, Quebec. With youth and young adults from across the country, it was a wonderful experience of faith, friends and fun.
The Assembly began on Friday, June 27th with the Blessing of the Waters (Agiasmos) service and icebreaker activities.
On Saturday, June 28th, participants visited the Holy Monastery of Panagia Parigoritissa (Virgin Mary of Consolation), where they were graciously hosted by Gerontissa Thekla and the Sisterhood. Presentations ranged from Byzantine chant to koliva making, with the day ending with Vespers and a Q-and-A session with Gerontissa.
On Sunday, June 29th, Archbishop Sotirios of Canada celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Montreal, assisted by Fr. Nikodimos Kodogeorgakis and Fr. Timoleon Prattas, Spiritual Youth Directors of the Archdiocese. A great number of youth received Holy Communion, served in the Altar and chanted.
Following the Liturgy, a luncheon was served courtesy of the Philoptochos Society of the Church. His Eminence once again spoke with paternal care to our youth, emphasizing the importance of this ministry for our Church. He thanked all leaders for their efforts, encouraging them to have more participants next year.
At this point, Presbytera Jeannie Constantinou presented her keynote address to the participants on why is watchfulness important and what should Orthodox young adults be watching for as they grow into their role as the leaders of our Church in this century. It was an impassioned call for all young people to live their faith with zeal and truth of the Gospel.
In the evening, all attended the Greek Festival at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Laval.
On June 30th, participants attended the Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Holy Apostles at Archangels G.O. Church in Montreal. Fr. Giokas offered a wonderful homily to the youth, while the Community offered breakfast to everyone.
The Archdiocese extended its warmest congratulations and thanks to: MET Youth President Michael Crillis and the national Board members; the various Youth Groups of Montreal and vicinity; all presenters and speakers; the local Philoptochos Societies of St. George, Holy Cross, and Archangels; the Sisterhood of Panagia Parigoritissa Monastery; along with the Ecumenical Patriarchate Archons in Canada and all sponsors.
