Military parade marks Greece’s Independence Day in Athens (upd)

The parade of the Armed Forces and Security Corps, held in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to mark the national anniversary of March 25, 1821, began today shortly after 11:00 a.m., in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas.

Earlier in the day, commemorative events began at dawn with a 21-gun salute fired from Lycabettus Hill, accompanied by reveille performances from military and police bands across central Athens.

At 8:00 a.m., the national flag was raised on the Acropolis, followed by an official thanksgiving service at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens at 10:00 a.m., led by Archbishop Ieronymos II, head of the Greek Orthodox Church. Another 21-gun salute followed shortly afterward.

A wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier took place just before the parade.

Celebrations are set to conclude in the evening with the formal lowering of the national flag at the Acropolis, accompanied by a final 21-gun salute.

Across the country, Independence Day is also being marked with military parades, flag displays on public buildings and warships, and evening illuminations.
