A message of faith, repentance, and spiritual healing was delivered by Metropolitan Shio of Senaki and Chkhorotsku during his homily on Holy Wednesday, ahead of the Service of Holy Unction.
The Metropolitan emphasized that God, in His mercy and goodness, has provided everything necessary for the salvation of humanity. He noted that God has prepared every means for the healing of both soul and body, demonstrating His care for human weakness and needs.
Referring to the sacrament of Holy Unction, he explained that it has been practiced in the Church since apostolic times. Citing the Epistle of Saint James the Apostle, he recalled that the faithful are called to invite the priests of the Church to anoint the sick with oil and pray for them, trusting that it is the Lord Himself who grants healing and forgiveness.
The Metropolitan explained that material elements such as oil, water, bread, and wine are used in the sacraments not because God needs them, but because human beings, living in a material world, require visible means through which divine grace is conveyed. He stressed that oil in itself has no power, but becomes a vessel of God’s healing grace.
He further highlighted that the anointing with oil is not only for physical healing but also for spiritual strengthening. He noted that it restores both bodily and spiritual strength and prepares believers to struggle against evil, calling them to become worthy “soldiers” of Christ.
The Metropolitan also urged the faithful to approach the sacrament with sincere repentance and faith, emphasizing that God has already provided everything necessary, but awaits a human response of gratitude, faith, and obedience to His commandments.
Finally, he warned that it would be a grave mistake to rely solely on human advice while neglecting God’s commandments, encouraging believers to place their trust in God while also making proper use of the gifts He has given.
Concluding, Metropolitan Shio called on the faithful to receive the sacrament so that it may serve for the healing of both soul and body, reaffirming that God’s grace strengthens believers in their spiritual journey and struggle.
