Metropolitan Seraphim of Kastoria who tested positive for COVID-19 in early December, lost the battle with the coronavirus.
The 61-year-old Metropolitan tested positive for COVID-19 in early December and was transferred to 424 General Military Hospital. On December 20, about a week ago, his intubation was deemed necessary by his doctors.
The funeral for the late hierarch will take place at the Metropolitan Church of the Dormition of Virgin Mary in Kastoria tomorrow, December 30, at 11.00, in compliance with all the COVID-19 restrictive measures. Metropolitan David of Grevena has been appointed as the locum tenens for the Metropolis of Kastoria.
The Metropolitan of Kastoria Serafeim (born Ioannis Papakostas) was born in 1959 in Agnantero, Karditsa. He studied at the Rizareio School of Athens and then at the Higher Ecclesiastical School (1983), and then studied at the Theological School of Athens (1987). He was ordained a deacon in 1983 and a presbyter in 1987.
He served as deacon, preacher and priest in charge of the Church of Saint Nikolaos in Kato Patisia, and there he had a rich pastoral activity, preaching and spiritual work in the field of youth and holy confession.
At the same time, he served as the Youth Director of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens and in the Holy Synod as the Head of Protocol and from 1990 as Secretary until the day of his election as Bishop. He was ordained Metropolitan of Kastoria on October 5, 1996.
