The Patriarchate of Romania announced that Metropolitan Petru, Archbishop of Chișinău and Metropolitan of Bessarabia, has submitted a request to retire from his ministry due to age, health reasons, and for the good of the Church.
According to a statement issued by the Patriarchate, the request was submitted on May 27, 2026, and will be presented for approval during the working session of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, scheduled to take place on June 3–4, 2026.
Following the submission of the request, Patriarch Daniel appointed Metropolitan Teofan, Archbishop of Iași and Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina, as Locum Tenens of the Archdiocese of Chișinău and the Metropolis of Bessarabia until the canonical election of a new Archbishop of Chișinău and Metropolitan of Bessarabia.
