An urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance to Mozambique has been issued by Metropolitan John of Zambia and Mozambique, in response to the severe flooding and extreme weather events that have struck the country in recent weeks.
In his statement, Metropolitan John warned that Mozambique is facing a rapidly escalating humanitarian crisis, noting that “repeated floods and widespread extreme weather phenomena – tropical cyclones – have recently swept across Mozambique, severely affecting the southern and central parts of the country, particularly the regions of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, and Manica.”
He stressed the scale of the devastation, stating that “the humanitarian disaster is immeasurable in terms of human lives lost, the destruction of settlements, and damage to basic infrastructure critical for the survival of the population.”
According to current estimates, he added, “more than two million citizens may be affected by the end of the rainy season, in April 2026.”
Speaking with a strong sense of pastoral responsibility and solidarity, Metropolitan John issued a public call for support: “In my capacity as Metropolitan of Zambia and Mozambique, I appeal for the provision of humanitarian aid to Mozambique, in a spirit of solidarity among peoples.”
He explained that the Holy Metropolis is making every possible effort to collect and dispatch assistance, with particular attention to vulnerable groups, “women, children, the injured, and others in urgent need.”
He emphasized that there is an immediate shortage of essential supplies, including tents and temporary shelters, clothing and bedding, long-lasting food and drinking water, medical and pharmaceutical supplies, sanitary equipment, and, where possible, technical or operational support in the field of civil protection.
The Metropolitan made special reference to Greece, highlighting its longstanding humanitarian tradition: “The assistance of Greece, a country with a long history of humanitarian offering and a strong spirit of solidarity, will make a substantial contribution both to the relief of the affected populations and to strengthening the presence and standing of Hellenism on the African continent.”
He further clarified that “the Holy Metropolis of Zambia and Mozambique, in cooperation with the Hellenic Red Cross and local bodies in Greece and Mozambique, is able to support the distribution of aid with transparency, speed, and operational effectiveness,”
adding that preparations are already underway for a container that will transport humanitarian assistance to Mozambique.
Concluding his appeal, Metropolitan Ioannis extended an open invitation to all who wish to help: “Anyone who wishes to contribute tangibly to this effort, by offering anything that could alleviate the pain and hardship of the affected populations, is kindly asked to contact our associate at the following number: +30 694 435 0675.”
