On Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., the Metropolitan of Zambia held an official meeting at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Mozambique with the Minister of the Presidency, Mr. Eduardo Joaquim Mulémbwè.
The Metropolitan and Minister Mulémbwè share a longstanding friendship dating back to their joint participation in the Pan-African Parliament, a connection that contributed to the particularly warm and cordial atmosphere of the meeting.
During their discussions, the Metropolitan officially announced two important developments concerning the Orthodox Church’s presence in the region. First, he informed the Minister of the elevation of the Diocese of Mozambique to the rank of a Holy Metropolis, which will henceforth bear the title Holy Metropolis of Zambia and Mozambique. Secondly, he announced the transfer of the Metropolis’ seat, which will operate on a rotating basis during the new phase of its ministry.
The Metropolitan also briefed the Minister on a number of initiatives being developed by the Holy Metropolis in cooperation with governmental and local partners.
Particular attention was given to the Metropolis’ Olympic Programs, which focus on Olympic education and the promotion of Olympic ideals. Discussions centered on preparations for the major Olympic History Exhibition that is scheduled to be hosted in the capital city of Maputo as part of the celebrations marking 130 years since the revival of the Modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
The two sides also exchanged views on a variety of social and cultural projects aimed at strengthening cooperation between the Holy Metropolis and the Government of Mozambique, while contributing to education, community development, and intercultural dialogue.
The meeting concluded in an atmosphere of deep friendship and mutual respect.
