On February 13, Metropolitan Nicholas of Plovdiv welcomed the Mayor of Panagyurishte, Mr. Zhelyazko Gagov, along with deputy mayors and the leadership of the Municipal Council. The official meeting took place in the reception hall of the newly established Metropolitan Residence in Plovdiv.
Metropolitan Nicholas welcomed the Mayor and the Municipal Council members, emphasizing the importance of joining efforts for the well-being of the people and strengthening the spiritual foundation of the community. He introduced the leadership of the Plovdiv Metropolis and provided an overview of the ancient history, liturgical life, educational and social activities, as well as the church construction efforts within the diocese.
A key focus of the discussion was the necessity of religious education in schools to instill Christian values in the younger generation. Metropolitan Nicholas underscored that knowledge of the eternal teachings of the Church is crucial in shaping the moral and spiritual character of youth.
Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and profound spiritual insights shared by Metropolitan Nicholas. He highlighted the municipality’s commitment to fostering responsibility and work ethic in young people by organizing agricultural training programs.
Moreover, the Mayor voiced his hope for closer collaboration between local authorities and the Church in realizing the project of establishing an Orthodox Spiritual Center in Panagyurishte. The initiative aims to become a hub for spiritual guidance, education, and community support.
As a token of appreciation, Mayor Gagov presented Metropolitan Nicholas with a painting created by children with special needs. Additionally, on behalf of the Municipal Council, Ms. Galina Matanova gifted the Metropolitan an iconostasis of the Holy Theotokos, the heavenly protector of Panagyurishte.
In return, Metropolitan Nicholas bestowed upon all attendees icons of the Holy Theotokos and copies of the Holy Bible, offering them as a prayerful remembrance and blessing.
