Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphou participates in the battle of the Archdiocesan Elections. The news was conveyed by the candidate for President of the Republic of Cyprus, Christodoulos Protopapas, who also took on the role of head of the staff of the Metropolitan of Morphou.
Asked by philenews to comment on how his new role arose, Christodoulos Protopapas mentioned that they have known each other for 40 years with the Metropolitan of Morphou. He also made it clear that the Metropolitan did not want the word “elections” to be heard while the Archbishop was alive and therefore did not deal with the issue, but made the decision at a meeting, a few days after the Archbishop’s death.
Asked to comment if he considers that the fact that he is running as a presidential candidate and at the same time heads the staff of Metropolitan Morphou does not create any conflict, Protopapas argued that there is no conflict of interest, while he stressed that in his view the Archdiocesan elections are more important than the Presidential elections, which creates such great interest from great powers as the USA and Russia.”
“It is for this reason that I decided to take on this role,” he argued afterwards. “After all, we are both in favor of the complete separation of state and church,” he added.
In conclusion, he pointed out that the headquarters and the creation of the Metropolitan’s support groups in the various cities were currently being organized.
