Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral, visited today, February 2, the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs Church in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. During his visit, he paid his respects at the tomb of Saint Sava, where the first Archbishop of the Serbian Church was originally laid to rest.
Veliko Tarnovo is the city where Saint Sava reposed in the Lord while returning from his second pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1237, King Vladislav solemnly transferred the saint’s relics, with the highest ecclesiastical and state honors, to the Monastery of Mileševa Monastery.
Metropolitan Joanikije is currently on a multi-day visit to Bulgaria. On the previous day, he took part in the Eucharistic celebration at the Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Lovech, marking the 25th anniversary of the episcopal ministry of Metropolitan Gabriel. The Divine Liturgy was presided over by Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria.
