The inauguration of the new Military Housing Complex for Officers and Armed Forces Personnel took place on Thursday, May 14, 2026, on the island of Agathonisi, in the presence of Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias.
The blessing service (Agiasmos) for the inauguration ceremony was performed by Metropolitan Nikolaos of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki, while the Minister was accompanied by Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff Dimitrios Choupis.
The event formed part of broader efforts to strengthen housing infrastructure for members of the Armed Forces serving in Greece’s border and island regions.
In his remarks, Minister Dendias referred to current geopolitical tensions and stressed Greece’s commitment to international law and maritime rights.
“We Greeks are facing revisionist claims, which have recently intensified through the invocation of non-existent rights,” he stated. “They escalate through unilateral plans that directly violate the rules of the international legal order, and often even common sense itself.”
Speaking from Agathonisi, the Minister emphasized that all Greek islands possess the rights provided under international law.
“From Agathonisi, I want to remind once again that all our islands have exactly the rights provided for by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea — neither more nor less,” he said.
