Metropolitan of Larissa perfoms Memorial Service for Tempi tragedy victims, calls for truth

With deep respect, sorrow, and a sense of frustration over the delayed investigation and perceived obstruction of truth, Metropolitan Ieronymos of Larissa and Tyrnavos, along with a large group of clergy, led a memorial service (Trisagion) at the site of the Tempi train disaster today. The service, held two years after the tragedy, brought together families of the victims who continue their fight for justice and accountability.

Pain, Determination, and the Quest for Truth

The dignified presence of the victims’ relatives, combined with their words of pain, anger, strength, and determination, defined the solemn gathering. Their unwavering commitment to uncovering the full truth of that horrific night resonated throughout the event, setting the tone for the commemoration.

A large crowd stood in reverent silence, joining in prayer for the 57 victims. In his brief address, Metropolitan Ieronymos not only offered prayers for the repose of the departed and divine comfort for their families but also expressed admiration for their resilience.

“You bear the burden of your pain, yet you continue to fight for the truth to shine. Nothing should remain unanswered, and every dark corner must be illuminated so that the full reality of that night is revealed.”

The Metropolitan emphasized the biblical mandate: “Fight for the truth until death” (Sirach 4:28), adding that “the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32).

He also underscored that truth is a fundamental pillar of democracy, stating that it upholds the ethos and values essential for a just and thriving society.

Clergy Join Protest in Larissa

Earlier in the day, clergy from Larissa, led by Metropolitan Ieronymos, participated in a protest rally in the city’s central square, marking two years since the tragic train crash. Their presence reinforced the ongoing demand for justice and transparency, as the fight for answers and accountability continues.

Mass rallies in memory of victims of rail accident at Tempi accross Greece

It is recalled that the mass rally commemorating the 57 victims of the tragic rail accident at Tempi concluded with a speech by the mother of one of the victims, Maria Karystianou, on Friday afternoon.

Crowds of people of all ages packed Syntagma Square in Athens and the surrounding streets during the two hours of the rally, demanding justice.
