Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and all Ukraine recently shared a heartfelt message on social media reflecting on a powerful moment of prayer and remembrance. He wrote, “Gathering and praying for our defenders is above all a sincere testimony of respect and gratitude to those who gave their lives for us and for our homeland. It is also a support for those who are currently defending Ukraine for the sake of our future.”
The Metropolitan expressed profound thanks to everyone who gathered in the village of Lishnya in Ternopil region for the All-Ukrainian pilgrimage commemorating those fallen in the Russo-Ukrainian war, including the families of Ukrainian soldiers, servicemen, clergy, and the faithful.
He noted the symbolic significance of the event coinciding with the Feast of the Dormition of Righteous Anna — the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos — regarded as the protector of mothers and those in mourning. “In the memorial church built in her honor, we celebrated the Divine Liturgy — praying for all who gave their lives for Ukraine and for those who continue to defend her today. Thus, this day reminds us of the sacrifice and faith that sustain us in our struggle for truth and freedom.”
Metropolitan Epifaniy reminded his followers that “in difficult times, the Lord does not abandon us, He is with us. He will continue to lead us on the path we have chosen. This path of truth is difficult and thorny, yet with God’s help, we will surely overcome it.”
He urged gratitude toward the Merciful Creator for the blessings bestowed so far: “He preserved our united Ukrainian state and promotes the development and strengthening of our Local Ukrainian Orthodox Church.”
Recognizing this, the Metropolitan emphasized, “We understand that we are fighting for the establishment of truth and the preservation of the great gift of God — freedom. Perhaps before, we did not always fully appreciate this gift or grasp its importance for our people. But now every Ukrainian feels that freedom grows in the heart of each who cherishes it.”
He called on all to honor the memory of modern heroes — those who sacrificed their lives for freedom, the unity of the Ukrainian State, and the Ukrainian Church that deeply honors their sacrifice. “We ask for God’s mercy and help in the coming days of our life and struggle, which will certainly end in victory and just peace for Ukraine.”
In closing, Metropolitan Epifaniy prayed, “Dear brothers and sisters in Christ! May the Lord grant rest to the souls of all fallen Ukrainian soldiers in His heavenly dwellings. May He strengthen those who now stand in defense of Ukraine and protect them from all evil. And may Righteous Anna, mother of the Most Holy Theotokos, be a comfort to grieving hearts and a protector for everyone who defends truth and love on this earth. Let us pray for our loved ones!”
