Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv paid tribute to the late Patriarch Filaret, reflecting on his legacy and urging continued commitment to the development of an independent Church of Ukraine.
In his message, Metropolitan Epifaniy подчеркed that the late Patriarch devoted more than seven decades of service to the Church, leaving behind a profound spiritual and historical legacy. He noted that, regardless of how long a person lives, the time inevitably comes to complete one’s earthly journey. Patriarch Filaret, he said, has now departed from this life, with his spirit returning to God, whom he faithfully served, while his body has been laid to rest in the church where he prayed and preached.
Despite his passing, Metropolitan Epifaniy stressed that the memory of Patriarch Filaret’s good works and the love of the faithful for him remain alive. He described him as a hierarch who made a significant historical contribution to the establishment and strengthening of the local, autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
He emphasized that it is now the responsibility of the faithful to continue praying for the repose of the Patriarch’s soul and to carry forward the work to which he dedicated his life. In particular, he highlighted the importance of preserving the independence of the Church in Ukraine and ensuring that it remains free from external influence.
Metropolitan Epifaniy also pointed to the broader spiritual and national dimension of this mission, stating that the Church must continue to develop without being subjected to pressures or control from outside forces. He underlined the importance of maintaining both spiritual freedom and unity among Orthodox believers in Ukraine.
Concluding his message, he offered prayers for the eternal rest of Patriarch Filaret, asking God to forgive his sins and grant him eternal life among the saints. He expressed the hope that the late Patriarch’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations in their faith and dedication to the Church.
