On behalf of Metropolitan Epiphaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine, Archbishop Agapit of Vyshhorod delivered a heartfelt congratulatory message during the enthronement ceremony of Archbishop Elias as the new Primate of the Orthodox Church of Finland on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the Uspenski Cathedral in Helsinki. The letter expressed warm wishes for Archbishop Elias’ election and inauguration, emphasizing the strong spiritual bonds between the Ukrainian and Finnish Orthodox Churches.
“On behalf of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and personally, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on your election and enthronement as Archbishop of Helsinki and All Finland,” Metropolitan Epiphaniy wrote. He conveyed his blessings for “many years of blessed service, strong health, and success in all good endeavors.”
Metropolitan Epiphaniy expressed deep gratitude to the Finnish Orthodox Church for its steadfast condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, its call for the restoration of a just peace, and its humanitarian support for Ukrainian refugees. He highlighted the strengthening of ties between the Ukrainian and Finnish Churches during this challenging period for Ukraine and Europe.
Reflecting on his visit to Finland a year prior, Metropolitan Epiphaniy recalled their joint prayers for “truth, victory, and just peace” and extended his gratitude to Archbishop Emeritus Leo for his dedication and service. He requested that Archbishop Elias convey appreciation and well-wishes to his predecessor.
Metropolitan Epiphaniy lauded Archbishop Elias as a “wise and experienced shepherd” who has faithfully served Christ’s Church and demonstrated a commitment to Orthodox witness through preaching, worship, and good works. He expressed confidence that Archbishop Elias’ new leadership would yield abundant spiritual fruits and strengthen the Finnish Orthodox Church, which recently celebrated its centenary under the omophorion of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
“With all our hearts, we proclaim together: Axios! You are worthy!” the letter declared, emphasizing prayers for “many years of abundant grace” for Archbishop Elias, the clergy, and the faithful of the Finnish Orthodox Church.
The message concluded with a request for prayers for Ukraine and its Orthodox Church amidst ongoing suffering, along with an invitation for Archbishop Elias to visit Ukraine at a mutually convenient time.
“In Christ’s brotherly love, I remain your brother and fellow servant in the Lord,” Metropolitan Epiphaniy affirmed, highlighting the shared mission of Orthodox Churches to witness faith and uphold justice in challenging times.
