In a moving social media post, Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine offered a reflection on the Gospel reading of the miraculous feeding of more than five thousand people, encouraging the faithful to seek the Word of God, trust in divine providence, and cherish the Holy Eucharist as the true nourishment for eternal life.
“Yesterday we heard from the Gospel about the miraculous feeding which the Lord provided for more than five thousand people… Though they had only five loaves and two fish, even such a small amount of food was enough to satisfy the great multitude, because the Lord miraculously multiplied the bread and fish, so that there was enough for everyone – and even more left over.”
He explained that this miracle calls us to reflect on our own priorities: “This reading reminds us of our duty to find time and opportunity to set aside all life’s affairs and needs, in order to fully devote ourselves to the Lord and communion with Him.”
“We worry and fuss about many things, but all earthly cares will remain here. The knowledge of God’s Word, the time spent in prayerful communion with the Lord, participation in worship and the sacraments – all of this has incomparable spiritual value, because it truly brings us closer to salvation and to blessed eternity.”
The Metropolitan drew a parallel between the people who followed Christ into the wilderness and the people of Israel who wandered the desert after leaving Egypt:
“God performed a miracle, feeding His people with manna from heaven… He did not abandon those who trusted in Him, even in seemingly hopeless conditions.”
“We hear how a gathering of more than five thousand people was fed from only five loaves and two fish – though by natural law this is impossible. This is proof for each of us: when we trust in God, He makes the impossible possible.”
Quoting the Gospel of Matthew, he reminded the faithful: “Do not worry, saying: what shall we eat, or drink, or wear? For your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:31–33)
“This miracle reminds us of the Holy Eucharist”The third lesson from the Gospel reading, Metropolitan Epifaniy said, is a deep reminder of the Holy Eucharist:
“Under the appearance of bread and wine, we receive the true Body and Blood of Christ… Earthly food cannot fully satisfy a person, nor can it lead to eternal life. But the Lord has given us Bread that truly nourishes, gives grace-filled strength to body and soul, and opens within us a source of true life.”
“For twenty centuries, Christians have partaken of this Bread – yet it never diminishes… No matter where we are, when we partake of the Heavenly Bread and the Cup of salvation in the gathering of Christ’s Church, we receive the same Food and the same Drink, which are miraculously multiplied to give spiritual nourishment to all the faithful.”
He also noted the symbolic connection between the five loaves used in the Gospel miracle and the Church’s liturgical tradition: “Our Orthodox Church uses five loaves during the Divine Liturgy and festal services as a symbol of this miracle… It reminds us to come to Christ, to seek Him, to listen to His Word – and then He will not leave us without what we truly need, just as He did not leave the people in the wilderness without food.”
In closing, Metropolitan Epifaniy encouraged the faithful to keep these lessons close to heart:
“May these lessons from the Gospel reading about the miraculous feeding of more than five thousand people with five loaves be of benefit to us as well… So that amid the endless matters of this world, we never forget the most important thing – to come to the Savior, the only One who gives us the true Bread of life that leads to blessed eternity. Amen.”
