Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine marked the International Day of Charity with a message on social media highlighting the power of mercy, kindness, and good works as forces of healing and resilience, particularly in times of war.
“Charity takes many forms of expression, but what they all have in common is that they are voluntary and born of love and mercy in the heart,” Metropolitan Epifaniy wrote. “True charity is sincere, selfless, quiet, loving and effective. Such charity is pleasing to God, and it is so valued because it becomes helpful and salvific for those to whom it is directed.”
The Metropolitan emphasized that charitable acts not only bless those who receive but also transform the giver: “Charity is true medicine, which benefits not only the heart of the one who does good deeds, but also the souls of those who receive them.”
Reflecting on the ongoing war in Ukraine, he underlined how acts of kindness and solidarity have become a shield against destruction. “We see this clearly in our own experience during the current war,” he said. “Thanks to Ukrainians helping one another and the support of people of goodwill around the world – thanks to benefactors, patrons, volunteers and helpers – we overcome the consequences of enemy aggression, save lives, rebuild what has been destroyed, and unite our forces for revival and defense. This is a powerful and effective weapon against the enemy.”
Quoting Scripture, Metropolitan Epifaniy stressed that evil can only be overcome with good: “This is yet another argument which shows that evil, as Scripture says, is overcome by good – particularly when works of mercy, charity, and kindness are carried out.”
Marking September 5 as International Day of Charity, he urged the faithful to remember those who have given their time, aid, and support, and to continue spreading kindness. “On this special day let us remind ourselves of the importance of goodness and mercy in this world,” he said. “Let us gratefully remember those who have given us their time and any help or support. And let our gratitude inspire us to continue doing good, to help others, to change this world for the better.”
He concluded with a heartfelt prayer: “Great thanks and sincere prayers for everyone who strives and acts in doing good deeds!”
