Metropolitan Iakovos of Ireland issued a message on social media addressing the escalating tensions and violence in the Middle East, urging the faithful to pray for peace and reconciliation.
In his statement, the hierarch reflected on the suffering caused by war, noting that innocent people are often the primary victims of conflict. “During the past twenty-four hours, we have once again witnessed the cruelty of war in the Middle East, with the involvement of many nations,” he wrote. “The future appears uncertain and, once again, it is primarily innocent people who suffer.”
Metropolitan Iakovos emphasized that the Church constantly prays for peace throughout the world, describing war as a grave moral failure rooted in human division. “War is the greatest sin, for it is the result of envy, the absence of love, and the disruption of unity among human beings, who are called by the Holy God to live together in peace, in a spirit of reconciliation, love, and harmony.”
He lamented that this ideal of unity and mutual respect is far from reality, observing that “the Middle East, once again, is in flames.”
Despite the scale of the crisis, the Metropolitan encouraged believers not to underestimate the power of prayer. “Our own practical contribution may seem small,” he said, “yet it is the duty of us all to pray without ceasing, so that by the grace of God all sides may be enlightened and peace may prevail.”
Concluding his message, Metropolitan Iakovos stressed the urgent need to respect the dignity of every human person and to cultivate love, unity, and reconciliation. He called on the faithful to dedicate themselves to prayer both privately and collectively as members of the Body of Christ, asking God to grant peace to a troubled world.
