Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia conveyed a message of blessing and encouragement to the newly formed Government of the Republic of Moldova, expressing his prayers and hopes for wisdom, courage, and unity in the nation’s leadership.
“At this moment of renewal in the governmental life of the Republic of Moldova,” Metropolitan Petru wrote, “we address you, with paternal blessing, heartfelt congratulations and prayers for divine assistance, asking God to grant you wisdom, courage, and sound judgment in the difficult yet noble mission of leading the country toward unity, stability, and prosperity.”
He emphasized that “the service of governing a nation is, according to the Gospel, a calling to sacrifice and dedication,” and expressed his wish that the new government’s term “be a time of cooperation, involvement, and solidarity, in which every decision springs from love for people and the desire to bring justice, dignity, and well-being to the citizens of this country.”
Metropolitan Petru reaffirmed the Church’s readiness for collaboration, stating: “The Metropolis of Bessarabia, an integral part of the Romanian Orthodox Church and an institution with a rich missionary, spiritual, cultural, and social activity, expresses its full openness and desire to cooperate with the new Executive of the Republic of Moldova. We have been, and will remain, a loyal partner of the state — a constant promoter of democratic values, freedom, Romanian identity, and our country’s European path.”
He also welcomed the government’s plan, saying: “We received with joy and confidence the program of the Cabinet led by Your Excellency, founded on noble principles of the common good, care for every citizen, safe communities, fair justice, unifying culture, cohesion between the banks of the Prut, and diplomacy for peace. These are also the values the Church cultivates through its spiritual and moral work: unity, justice, solidarity, and social peace.”
Addressing several key priorities, the Metropolitan called for “full respect for the rights of the religious communities of the Metropolis of Bessarabia and those seeking to return to the Mother Church,” “a fair and objective justice system,” “a genuine partnership with the Ministry of Culture for the protection and restoration of sacred and national heritage,” and “the continuation of Moldova’s commitments toward Romania and the Romanian Orthodox Church regarding the restitution of the Metropolis’ property — an act of historical, spiritual, and moral justice.”
“A just, European, and democratic society,” he wrote, “is not built solely through economic or political reforms, but through the strengthening of spiritual, moral, and cultural ties among people. The Metropolis of Bessarabia will remain a partner in dialogue, a pillar of balance, and a moral support for all government initiatives that serve the common good, social peace, and the authentic values of the Romanian people in the Republic of Moldova.”
Concluding his message, Metropolitan Petru offered his blessing: “We pray that Almighty God, who ordains times and nations, may grant you health, strength, and grace to fulfill with faith and dignity the mission entrusted to you. May the wisdom and balance of Your Excellency and the new government team guide the Republic of Moldova with dignity on its path toward peace, prosperity, and national and European unity.”
