The election of the new Head of the Serbian Orthodox Church was held on Thursday, the 18th of February 2021, by the Hierarchy of the Serbian Patriarchate since late Patriarch Irenej of Serbia reposed in the Lord.
Metropolitan Porfirije of Zagreb and Ljubljana has been elected the new Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, and Patriarch of Serbia. He is a wonderful hierarch, has received theological education, is a Greek-language learner, and has been serving and representing in many ecumenical initiatives the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium and Exarch of the Netherlands and Luxembourg, as President of the Episcopal Assembly and representative of all Orthodox Christians to the Benelux states, congratulated the Holy Clergy and the lay members of the Serbian parish on the election of their new Patriarch. He also wished for a long and successful patriarchal ministry.
