Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria expressed the deep sorrow of the Orthodox Church over the passing of Pope Francis, calling it “a significant event also for the Orthodox Church.” In a heartfelt statement, he extended sincere condolences to the Roman Catholic Church of Austria.
The Metropolitan emphasized the Pope’s humble and simple life: “He lived in humility and simplicity and showed particular care for people, conveying love for our Lord Jesus Christ.” He praised the late Pope’s deep concern for social issues and the protection of the natural environment, as well as “his great care for peace and justice in the world.”
He also recalled the close friendship between Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, especially in light of their many meetings and the planned joint pilgrimage in May to Nicaea for the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council.
“Throughout his life, the late Pope Francis was a faithful servant and disciple of the Lord,” said Metropolitan Arsenios. “We pray that the Lord grants his humble servant eternal rest.” He concluded with a call to pray for a worthy successor to the Roman Pontiff.
