Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria and Exarch of Hungary issued a heartfelt message on the occasion of the election of Pope Leo XIV as the new Bishop of Rome and head of the Roman Catholic Church.
“With spiritual love and sincere respect, we received the news of the election of the new Bishop of Rome, Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church,” Metropolitan Arsenios wrote. “In prayer and fraternal unity, we join all Christians around the world in asking for the grace and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit upon the new Pope, so that he may carry out his high and responsible office with wisdom, humility, and foresight.”
The Metropolitan expressed his hope that this new chapter in the life of the Roman Catholic Church would be a time of spiritual fruitfulness. He emphasized the importance of promoting unity among the Churches, deepening dialogue in truth and love, defending human rights, strengthening justice, and supporting peace in an unsettled world.
“We pray that the new Pope will be a true shepherd, father, and spiritual leader for the Catholic Church—someone who inspires through his morality, words, and example; who strengthens the faith of Catholic believers; who stands close to the weak and suffering; and who serves the global community with humility, discernment, and dedication.”
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the ongoing commitment of the Metropolis of Austria and the Exarchate of Hungary to dialogue and Christian unity: “The Metropolis of Austria and the Exarchate of Hungary always maintain and continue the dialogue of love with open hearts toward all those who seek truth and unity in Christ.”
