Metropolitan Nicolae of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of the Americas has expressed his compassion and called for prayers following the devastating earthquake in Venezuela that claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands injured.
“In these days of trial, my thoughts and prayers are with the entire Venezuelan people, and especially with the Orthodox community in Caracas, whom God has granted me the joy of knowing and shepherding throughout nearly twenty-four years of episcopal ministry,” the Metropolitan said in a message.
He expressed gratitude that the Orthodox wooden church in Caracas remained undamaged and that no members of the parish lost their lives. However, he noted that many faithful have suffered personal losses.
“Active members of our community, including Fr. Antonio García, chanter Gabriel Mercano, and other parish families, are mourning the loss of parents, close relatives, and loved ones. We share in their grief and pray that the Risen Lord will grant rest to those who have fallen asleep and comfort to those who mourn,” he said.
Metropolitan Nicolae urged all parishes and monasteries of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of the Americas to offer prayers for the victims of the disaster.
He also announced that, with the support of the Metropolis, the Orthodox parish in Caracas will organize charitable outreach in the coming days, providing assistance to injured people and families in need through hospitals in the Venezuelan capital.
“This is the most beautiful witness of the Gospel: to remain close to one another when suffering seems greater than human strength,” the Metropolitan said.
Concluding his message, he entrusted the victims to the protection of the Mother of God and the intercessions of Saints Constantine and Helen, patrons of the Orthodox community in Caracas, expressing hope that God would transform the tears of these difficult days into hope and renewed strength.
