Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and all Ukraine recently reflected on the deeper meaning of graduation during the 33rd commencement ceremony of the Kyiv Orthodox Theological Academy. In his heartfelt message, he emphasized that graduation is not an end, but rather the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning through life itself.
“Many, as students, eagerly await the end of their studies, thinking that graduation marks a conclusion, and then ‘life begins.’ But in reality, after graduation, the hardest education begins—learning from life itself, where there are no separate lessons of theory and practice, no retakes, second chances, vacations, or favorite courses,” Metropolitan Epifaniy said.
He reminded graduates that life brings a “necessary daily reality,” where “every action, word, intention, or thought has consequences, not only for ourselves but for everyone around us.”
The Metropolitan also expressed gratitude for the knowledge and wisdom imparted by the academy, recalling his own experience as a former student: “I received good knowledge, wise guidance, and important life lessons about how everything on this earth is in God’s hands. Despite all trials, we must always remember, notice, and be thankful that the Lord continually bestows His grace upon our lives.”
Acknowledging the current difficult times, with “so much evil around,” where “innocent people perish,” and “tyrants and aggressors seek to kill faith, will, and hope,” Metropolitan Epifaniy underscored the vital role of clergy: “Our service as priests and spiritual shepherds is essential, called to show the true path to salvation in the darkness of despair, to offer a spark of hope, and provide support to those in need.”
He conveyed his firm belief in the future of the Church, stating: “I sincerely believe that our graduates, our future priests, will become good shepherds of their people and our native Ukrainian Church.”
Metropolitan Epifaniy offered encouragement and hope: “May the Lord give you strength to grow, establish yourselves, continue gaining knowledge, and always improve, carrying the light of Christ’s truth to people.”
Finally, he reminded the graduates of the greater mission ahead: “Much remains to be done to establish the local Ukrainian Orthodox Church firmly and to unite all Orthodox Ukrainians around the Kyiv throne. The future of the Ukrainian Church and the Ukrainian state is in your hands, dear graduates. May God’s blessing be with all of you!”
